Fly Tying

Lightning Bug

This is a great pattern from North America for fishing heavy tailwater or in floods. It also has its uses as a pin fry imitation on both rivers and still waters.

  • Hook: Kamesan B400 or 175 or similar in sizes 12 through to 8’s
  • Silk: Black 8/0
  • Bead: In proportion to the hook. I have used a 3mm silver tungsten bead for a size 10 hook.
  • Tail: Pheasant tail fibres
  • Rib: silver wire
  • Body: Blue Krystal mirror flash wrapped as a body.
  • Legs/hackle: Black hen tied flat over the thorax
  • Thorax: Peacock herl
  • Shellback: 4 strands of the body material tied over.
